How to Build a Wood Stove Using an Old Propane Tank

It’s no secret that propane gas can be used in a multitude of ways, but propane users are taking things a step further by getting creative with old propane tanks and turning them into homemade wood stoves. How sweet is that?

What a handy way to recycle that old, rusted propane tank taking up space in the garage or sitting in the yard! Take some me-time during your day off and get crafty. Grab a cold beer, switch on some tunes and complete your masterpiece. With a few supplies, you can make a durable wood stove for the entire family to enjoy on those chilly winter evenings.

This short video gives a quick rundown on how you can construct your very own propane tank wood stove.

Supplies

  • An old propane tank
  • Small sheet of metal (for a top plate)
  • High-temperature paint (slather a few coats on after the pit is complete)
  • Metal pipe (in the video they used a piece of an umbrella stand)
  • Grate from a grille (to hold wood in the stove)

Tools

  • Metal grinder
  • A tool to cut steel (in the video this is accomplished with an air compressor and cutoff blade)
  • Welder

Have fun, but be safe and remember: always exercise extreme caution when handling anything with fire.

Safety Tips

Tip 5: Don't run out of gas!

Serious safety hazards, such as fire or explosion can result. If your storage tank gets empty or depleted, air and moisture can enter. This can cause a build-up of rust inside the tank. Rust can decrease the concentration of the odor of propane, making it harder to smell. If your propane tank runs out of gas, any pilot lights on your appliances will go out. This can be extremely dangerous if not handled properly.
